- The following is an original (and not fluent :+) ) message based solely
- on the vocabulary and grammar in Chapter 1 & 2 of Mícheál ó Siadhail's
- _Learning Irish_. Elem IG learners can post questions or corrections on
- G-L Elem IG Beg, or post a follow up message in Irish (based upon the
- same chapters) as in a *group pen pal mode.* Sean is posting a message
- on Sept 18 based on Ch 1 & 2, Tomás on Sept 25 based on 3 & 4 (combining
- 3 & 4 because of the grammatical brevity of 3). Need volunteer for Oct 2
- based on 3-4. Message follows:
-
- Tom at á orm. Cén chaoi a bhfuil tu? Níl mé duine ard. Níl
- múinteoir ar bith anseo ach tá mé anseo. Tá fear agus gasúir
- anseo. Níl sibh anseo ach a oiread ach tá mé anseo. Tá mé sasta.
- Tá mé anseo ach tá bord agus lampa ansin. Go raibh maith 'ad.
- Oíche mhaith. Tom

- I have prepared a workbook of exercises to accompany ó Siadhail for use in
- my beginning Irish classes at the U of Minnesota, to address the weakness
- I see in the text of providing only translation exercises (ugh!). My exer-
- cises are the strictly mechanical manipulation type, which students find
- useful as a foundation before proceeding to more creative use of the language:
- e.g., things like tense changing, choosing the right mutation, gender agreement,
- preposition choice, etc. Not fascinating reading, but necessary practice,
- at least for those whose learning style is formally oriented. If learners
- would like, I can post a few of these exercises each week (there are quite
- a lot for some of the meatier chapters), perhaps before the readings come
- up, since I may not always have access to my e-mail on Fridays. Let me
- know if there's interest in exercises of this sort.
- Regarding "tá sé múinteoir', etc., this doesn't work, I'm afraid.
- Tá SOMEBODY_______ is a sentence type which allows the blank to be filled
- only by an adjective, adverb, or prepositional phrase, not a noun or noun
- phrase. For the type "I am a teacher" see lesson 12. Alternatively, it
- can be done with tá and a possessive pronound matching the subject (lesson 10):
- Ta mé i mo mhúinteoir.

- I don't have much to offer from lesson 1, since the focus is largely on
- pronunciation, which we drill in class. Here are a few dialogs based
- on common greetings which ó Siadhail in his wisdom doesn't see fit to
- introduce until lesson 23. Most may be familiar to beginners anyway.
-
- A. Ruairí: Dia dhuit.
- Bríd: Dia 's Muire dhuit.
- Ruairí: Mise Ruairí.
- Bríd: Mise Bríd. Cén chaoi a bhfuil tú?
-
- B. B: Dia dhuit a Ruairí.
- R: Dia 's Muire dhuit, a Bhríd. Cé hiad sin?
- B. Gabh mo leithscéal. Seo í úna agus sin í Cáit.
- R. Dia dhaoibh. Cén chaoi a bhfuil sibh?
-
- C. R: Dia dhuit. Cén t-ainm atá ort?
- P: Peige atá orm. Agus cén t-ainm atá ortsa?
- R: Mise Ruairí.
- P: Cén chaoi a bhfuil tú a Ruairí?
- R: Go maith. Agus thusa?
- P. Tá mise go maith freisin.
-
- Now try filling in the blanks in the following:
-
- D. Bríd: __________ dhaoibh.
- Máirtín agus úna: Dia 's ___________ dhuit.
- Bríd: Cé hí sin?
- M: Seo _______ úna.
- B: Tá __________ romhat a úna. Bríd ________ orm.
-
- E. Cáit: Dia ______________.
- Máirtín: __________________ dhuit.
- Mise Máirtín.
- C: Mise _____________. Cén chaoi __________________ tú?
- M: Tá mé go _____________. Agus thusa?
- C: __________ maith.
-
- F. úna agus Bríd: ___________ dhuit.
- Cáit: Dia 's Muire ___________. _________ chaoi a bhfuil sibh?
- U: Tá mé go maith, go raibh ___________ 'ad.
- B: Agus ______ mise go ___________ freisin. An ________ tusa
- go maith? (see lesson 2 for the question form)
- C: ___________ muise! An bhfuil Ruairí anseo?
- B: Níl a fhios agam.
- ú: Níl sé ___________ anois.
- C: ___________ sin é?
-
- [Oops, I see some of lesson 2 has slipped into that last one. If other phrases
- are unfamiliar and can't be figured out from context don't panic. Most of
- it shows up in the first few lessons, except the various forms of hello,
- which are in 23, as mentioned above. I might note that sometimes I intro-
- duce additional material into my course that I find necessary for classroom
- interaction before ó Siadhail gets to it (like 'I don't know in dialogue F).
- Some of that stuff finds its way into the exercises. I'll try to edit it
- out when I post things, but if I miss some, please forgive me and treat it
- as a learning experience. After all, even the very experienced learners
- won't necessarily understand every word they encounter, so you might as well
- get used to it. I'll post some from lesson 2 next week. I'll try for
- Thursdays, but my schedule won't always permit consistency. For those who
- expressed preference for keeping it all on Friday, this is as close as I
- can guarantee, since my computer won't always be accessible on Fridays; if
- there turns out to be a preference earlier in the week, it can always be
- shifted. Sorry for all the Béarla. I'll keep it down to instructions
- in the future.]
